Grace Vineyard was established in 1996 at Tai Yuan, Shan Xi, China. The area excluding the surrounding vineyard farmland was approximately 40 hectares. At the start up years, the vineyard facilities, namely the guest house and the fermentation plants were designed by a local design institute to mimic the European style, but in a simplistic Chinese way. In 2006, the President of the Vineyard invited me to design a new cellar building to house the increasing capacity of bottled wines, and asked for a modern style yet respecting the traditional Shan Xi historical characters. I therefore adopted a rectangular reinforced concrete structure cladded with the local made grey bricks on the facades. The inspiration came from the form and feeling of solidarity of the traditional Shan Xi courtyard houses.
Later on, the wines from Grace Vineyard received high commendation from world class wine critics. Demand and production capacity increased. In 2009, President invited me again to design a new wing of factory, revamp the guest house, administration building, and re-plan the landscape and the visiting route. The second phase of renovation and expansion was completed in 2011 winter and has received applause from the President and visitors.
